Student Bills
Student Bills while renting Newcastle Student Housing
Bills, Bills, Bills...
Moving from home or student accommodation means that now you get
the responsibility of handling all your own student bills in your
Newcastle student housing. Fun, right?
Never fear! WR have put together a little guide helping you with
everything from setting up your accounts to settling student
bills…
Electricity & Gas
The electricity, and gas if the property has it, will be working
the day you move in to your Newcastle student housing. It is your
responsibility to contact the suppliers and set up an account.
The first step is to find out who the current suppliers are, for
electricity call 0845 601 3268 and for gas call 0870 608 1524.
Simply take a meter reading and let the suppliers know the previous
tenants have moved out and you will be paying the bills now.
Water
You can arrange to pay your water bills for your Newcastle
student housing weekly, fortnightly, monthly or annually in
advance.
Council Tax
Good news! students don't have to pay council tax. However you
are responsible for informing the council of your student status.
You can usually download a confirmation letter from your university
intranet site to send to the council. If you are a mixture of
students and professionals in your household, you may have to make
a partial payment of the council tax bill but again your statuses
will have to be confirmed by the council.
TV License
Everyone with a television has to pay their TV license, even if
you are a student. If you and your housemates all have televisions
in your bedrooms you will still only be classed as one household
and pay one license between you. You can arrange online at www.tvlicensing.co.uk to
pay this weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually and if you're
living in Newcastle student housing you can often get refunds for
the summer months.
Internet/Sky/Virgin Media TV
For this one it's best to do your research to find the best
deals for you, keeping your student bills as low as possible. If
it's just internet you're after, there are companies who provide
special deals for students. If you want to pay for Sky or Virgin
Media television channels as well as internet, it may work out
better to get a bundle. You can find out from WR or your landlord
if Sky or Virgin is installed in your Newcastle student housing or
not.
Household Items
Buying things that the whole house will share such as toilet
roll, cleaning supplies, lightbulbs and items of food can end up
causing arguments so it's easiest if you decide right from the
beginning whether to all chip in equally to a household fund or
just take it in turns to buy the supplies.
Rent
If you and your housemates have decided to pay different rent
amounts depending on room size or if you are all paying out of one
account then make sure it still adds up to the full monthly amount
and that you let us know. This way we can note the changes on our
system and you won't be chased for money that you don't actually
owe us!
