Postgraduate Students Location Guide

So you’ve been accepted onto your Master's course and are now officially a Postgraduate Student! The next crucial step is finding suitable accommodation that complements your postgraduate journey.

Finding a comfortable, secure, and well-located living space can significantly enhance your overall experience. Lucky for you, Newcastle has some of the best postgraduate accommodation options, catering to a wide range of individuals.

Opting for private renting affords you greater flexibility in selecting a property that aligns with your preferences of location, cost, and amenities. It also typically proves more economical than university or independent halls.

Take a look at our guide to find out more about some of the best postgraduate locations to live in Newcastle.

Seekers’ Top Postgraduate Locations

Jesmond

Forever a favourite of locals and students, Jesmond is probably the best all-rounder when it comes to postgraduate living.

It’s the closest suburb to the City Centre, which means a nice easy 20 minute walk to the Universities, or if walking isn’t your thing then you can always hop on the Metro for added convenience.

While Jesmond is typically seen as a lively student location, many families and professionals also call this part of Newcastle home. Whether you are looking for somewhere to live with a fun nightlife on your doorstep, or a slower pace of life, enjoying many of the independent shops and cafes that the area has to offer, there is something for everyone in Jesmond.

Jesmond also offers its residents stunning views and walks through Jesmond Dene all year round, the perfect place to go and take a break from your studies.

For those who value a more vibrant setting, look for properties on, or near, Osbourne Road. This is the main strip in Jesmond, with lots of bars and restaurants, and is always busy with students looking for Happy Hour deals.

The City Centre

While the most expensive of all the locations, Newcastle City Centre is definitely the most convenient place for prospective postgraduates, due to the close proximity to Newcastle and Northumbria University.

Renting in Newcastle City Centre is somewhere that we’d recommend for students who love the hustle and bustle of city life, and who are partial to partying every now and again. With a vast range of clubs, bars, restaurants, and shops, the City Centre offers you everything you could possibly need for your stay in Newcastle.

Heaton

For postgraduate students looking for somewhere a little more off the beaten track, Heaton is a great option. It’s quieter than Jesmond and the City Centre, and is far enough away that you aren’t surrounded by freshers and partygoers, but still close enough to enjoy all the amenities that the city centre has to offer.

Chillingham Road is the main stretch in Heaton, complete with a plethora of restaurants and takeaways, as well as supermarkets, cafés, and pubs.

Heaton Park is also a notable feature in the area, where you can enjoy the use of tennis courts and basketball courts with your course mates.

Heaton is also a great choice for postgraduates looking to save some money, as the rents in this part of the city are generally a lot lower than Jesmond or the City Centre.

The Quayside

With unparalleled views of the seven bridges that connect Newcastle and Gateshead, the Quayside has to be one of the most beautiful locations in the city.

Not only is it a great location for enjoying the Newcastle nightlife, but it’s also perfect if you want to take things a bit easier and go for some leisurely walks or to check out the weekly Quayside market.

Like the City Centre, which is only a stones’ throw away, properties on the Newcastle Quayside do come at a premium, but it’s worth it if you want to remain somewhere central with lots to see and do around your studies.

Gosforth

Gosforth isn’t usually the first choice for Newcastle students, but it is a hidden gem perfect for postgraduates. It has great connections to the City Centre via three different Metro stations, as well as easy access to the city centre by road too.

In Gosforth, you’ll be able to find all the amenities you need like banks, big supermarkets, and hairdressers, right on your doorstep.

Gosforth is also home to a number of different golf courses, as well as Newcastle Racecourse which regularly hosts popular events, including Ladies Day.

Finding student accommodation suitable for your Master's journey requires careful evaluation, weighing aspects like convenience, budget, and your own specific needs. Newcastle is a great city for postgraduate accommodation as there really is something for everyone.
