You may not know the name Spital Tongues but you may be familiar with the area, it’s just on the outskirts of Newcastle City Centre and surrounded by Leazes Park, the Town Moor and Nuns Moor.
Why is it called Spital Tongues? This strange name derives originally from the word ‘hospital’ and a time when two strips or ‘tongues’ of land were given to St Mary Magdalene Hospital which was built in the late 1800’s.
