Moving to Newcastle: Where to start?

How far are you willing to commute? Newcastle has some excellent transport links but you need to work out if these will fit in with your daily plans. And are you willing to compromise commutability if you get to live closer to nature?

Do you want to live on your own, or are you going to explore house-share options? And an obvious one — what’s your budget?

These are some of the important questions to ask yourself first and foremost. Narrow down your search a little, and the rest will fall into place much more quickly.

Where are the best places to live in Newcastle?

Ultimately, the best place to live in Newcastle boils down to your personal preferences. While the factors above may lead you in certain directions, there’s a lot to say for the vibe of an area and the amenities it has to offer — so you’ll want to suss this out too.

Having said that, there are definitely a few hotspots young professionals in Newcastle should know about. We’ll introduce you to a few of our favourites to begin with.

The best places for young professionals to live in Newcastle

Whether you’re a recent graduate or you’ve found a new work opportunity, there are a few key areas popular with Newcastle professionals.

The City Centre

Like to be amongst the hustle and bustle? If you're living in Newcastle City Centre, chances are you’ll be able to walk to work — and more importantly, you’ll have Newcastle’s best attractions on your doorstep, including its buzzing nightlife.

Located centrally, you’ll be in a good position to explore other areas too. Newcastle has a great Metro system, especially in the city centre, so it won’t be hard for you to get around.

Bear in mind that you’ll pay a premium to live in the centre over the suburbs. But Newcastle is still one of the most affordable places to get a taste of big city life in the UK.

Quayside

Right at the heart of the City Centre, properties on the Quayside are a particularly popular place to live — and for good reason.

The Quayside’s history as an industrial dockside lives on in its charm today. With stunning waterside views and walks along the River Tyne comes an exciting independent scene. Expect markets, food trucks and coffee shops galore, as well as the more upscale bars and restaurants in Newcastle.

If you’re looking for the ultimate all-rounder, this could just be it.

Fenham

Properties in Fenham are another great choice for young professionals renting. However, it’s also a sought-after choice amongst first-time buyers due to its attractive house prices.

It's around 2 miles west of the City Centre, with convenient transport links — meaning however you prefer to travel, you should be able to get to work or your Saturday night plans in around 10 minutes.

And there are also plenty of amenities in Fenham itself, from pubs and restaurants to shops and gyms.

Gateshead

Nip across the river, and you’ll discover a greener side to Tyne and Wear. Properties in Gateshead are favoured by young professionals as it has lots of semi-rural, suburban areas. So if getting out into nature is more your thing, it’s worth considering — you’ll still only be 20 minutes from Newcastle City Centre.

Gateshead has easy travel connections with Newcastle, as well as boasting some great restaurants, cinemas, gyms and a wide range of shops housed in Europe’s largest indoor shopping mall, the Metrocentre. When it comes to housing itself, you’ll be able to get period properties or stylish new builds for much less than the city’s hotspots.
